classic_sit

Okay so you want to learn how to play the classical guitar but you have no idea where to begin. It really isn’t that hard to learn how to play as long as you have the necessary time to put into the craft and the patience to make it through the tough learning curve.

In this classical guitar lesson I will be going over somethings for you to get started such as your posture and the way you hold the guitar. If you didn’t know the classical guitar is the model every other acoustic guitar is based on. The main way you can tell the two guitars apart is that the classical normally has a wider fretboard and utilizes nylon instead of the steel strings you’ll see on acoustics.

This type of guitar is designed to let the top of the musical instrument vibrate but keep the neck, back, or sides from vibrating. Try to avoid picking a classical guitar that has a laminated top since they won’t give you the quality sound you want. If  you don’t mind spending a little extra money try to get a classic guitar made out of rosewood or spruce. However, the guitars that have the plywood tops with a thin layer of cedar will do just fine.

Keep in mind though that going for a guitar with better wood will help preserve your guitar for longer since they age better. The guitars made of cheaper wood will be good when you first get them and then the quality of the guitar and sound produced will decline over time. Meanwhile the guitars made with better woods will actually keep getting better as time goes on.

Your posture is very important when it comes to playing this hollow bodied instrument. Take a look at any professional classical guitar player and you’ll notice that they have an upright posture with their foot on a stool. With the right sitting position you’ll be able to minimize the amount of effort you have to use and you’ll be more stable and comfortable.

The proper sitting position involves keeping your back straight and resting the guitar on the thigh that is on the neck side. You will need the help of a footstool or a support placed on the thigh to raise the head of the guitar level.

You will rest the elbow on the edge of the body of the guitar and place the hand that plays the strings over the sound hole. You will need to bring the hand up to the height of the shoulder and to do this you’ll need to bend the arm on the neck side.

Position your thumb behind the neck, below the 2nd fret and behind the 3rd string. The key to playing the guitar properly is to relax your entire upper body from the shoulders to your hands. Now get a chair so you can support your guitar and make it more stable. Try to use a chair that will make your thigh horizontal. If your thigh is not angled correctly your guitar will keep slipping and interrupt your playing.

Once you get the grasp of holding the guitar in the proper position it’s time to start practicing pieces. You must make sure you avoid difficult pieces like Asturias or you might end up giving up on the guitar forever. Start with pieces like Fernando Carulli.

You can head to your local music store and get a book to study him. Pieces like “Waltz in E Minor” and “Country Dance” should get you started and help you build technique and confidence. If you are using tabs I would suggest that you try using sheet music. Just do a simple search for it online for some sight reading books.

One good book I know of is authored by Robert Benedict called “Sight Reading for the Classical Guitar levels 1 to 3″. Start off with the simple pieces and as your technique gets better you’ll begin to learn more complex pieces.

Not only should you learn how to play music on your classical guitar but you should also get familiar with how to string it and tune it. Many classical guitar players attempt to grow their nails to pluck the strings, while others use the flesh of their fingertips. This decision is all yours and depends on what you’re comfortable with.

Also, when you take classical guitar lessons for beginners it’ll be in your best interest to learn how to read conventional music notation. Try to learn more about half notes, whole notes, time signatures, scales, and accidental notes. Once you learn the proper sitting position and learn a few easy pieces you’ll be well on your way to becoming a pretty good classical guitar player.

Beginner Acoustic Guitar Lessons – The Basics You Need To Learn That Will Make You Good!

The main difference between an acoustic guitar and an electric is the body of the guitar. The acoustic guitar has a hollow body meanwhile the electric guitar is made of solid wood. The steel string is definitely the most popular type of guitar used by plenty of rock bands during acoustical jams.

If you really want to learn the guitar I strongly urge you to learn the basics. Learning the basics such as playing open chords and understanding how to switch between them easily will give you the best chance at becoming a really good guitarist. Now if you want to learn to play acoustic guitar you need to decide what style of picking you’re going to use.

You can use a small plastic pick or just forget about the pick and use your fingers to strum the guitar. When you strum the guitar and put your fingers on a fret you are playing chords. The most important chord you need to learn is the open chord because it’s an important part in a lot of songs. You should practice playing open chords until you can switch between them easily. There is no easy way around it you’re going to have to practice if you want to get good.

Every guitar lesson you should be practicing playing chords like C, E, Eem, A, Ams because this  will really improve your playing. As a matter of fact practicing playing any type of chords will benefit you a lot, but just make sure you find some easy chords to practice like the example I showed you above. Once you felt like you’ve practiced enough try playing some easy acoustic guitar songs.

Another tip I want to give you is that the root note of a chord is always the first note. So if you pluck the 5th string in a simple C chord you will get a C note. If you are a complete beginner you could start off using acoustic guitar tabs instead of learning to read music so you can learn faster. Tablatures are a much simpler version of music notation.

You need to begin learning about bends, hammer on, pull offs, and slides if you want to read acoustic tabs. Some things to keep in mind is that a slash “/” denotes slides, an “H” denotes hammer ons, “B” denotes bends, and “P” denotes pull offs. As soon as you feel confident in your ability to read tabs you should begin practicing by playing some easy songs.

Proper Body Posture & Fretting Positions & How to Play Guitar Tabs

online guitar lessons for beginners

Since every guitar and guitarist isn’t the same you will have to experiment a little until you find a position that works the best for you. Many beginners don’t know that it’s not just your fingers you use when you play the guitar, but your entire body. This is why proper body posture is so important whether you’re sitting or standing.

The most important thing to keep in mind is to remain loose and relax your arms and shoulders as much as you can. When you’re sitting you should put your fretting hand in the best position that allows you to reach all areas of the neck easily. Keep your wrists loose and don’t over bend them. Unless your left handed you should rest the guitar on your right leg and keep the neck of the guitar elevated.

If you are playing an electric guitar you’ll probably need to get a strap because most electric guitars have smaller bodies than the acoustic or classical and you won’t have enough surface area to balance the guitar the way you need to while sitting.

The proper standing position requires you keep the guitar as close to your chest as possible while playing. Many beginner guitarists make the mistake in keeping their guitar too low when they play because they think it looks cool.  If you have long arms you might have to turn the angle of the guitar upward a little so you can easily reach all areas of the fretboard.

Your fretting hand should always be positioned over the sound hole of your guitar. Some electric guitarist will position their fretting hand around the middle but a little bit more towards the neck side of the instrument. Unless your playing a barre your fingers should always be curved.

You have the option of strumming your guitar with either your thumb and fingers or a pick. Both of these methods are effective and will give you a different sound. Your thumb will support the fingers  pressure on the fretboard by pressing the other side of the neck.

You can also use your thumb for playing downstrokes and upstrokes when strumming. However the nail won’t sound as smooth or clear like when you use your fingers. Keep the tips of your fingers close to where the nail begins.

beginner guitar lessonsIf you’re using a pick the best place to keep your hands positioned is on the bridge. This will allow your hand to easily move to any string you want. You shouldn’t grip your pick too lightly. You should hold it tightly while still allowing some flexibility. To get better control over your pick you shouldn’t leave too much of it exposed.

guitar lessonsLearning how to play guitar tabs can seem a little intimidating at first, but it’s really very easy. If you’re someone trying to become a professional guitarist I strongly recommend you learn how to read music properly. On the other hand, if you’re not trying to make a career out of playing the guitar then guitar tablature is what you should focus on learning first since it’s a much easier to read method.

Guitar tablature is way to read musical notes on stringed instruments like a guitar. There are six horizontal lines on the tab staff which represents the six strings on your guitar. The numbers on these lines will tell you what fret you should put your finger on for a certain song.

The horizontal line on the very bottom represents the Low E string, the next line from the bottom represents the A string, the next line up is the D string, next is the G string, after that is the B string, and finally the line at the very top represents the high E string.

Each string will have a number labeled next to it and you should play the string that is numbered. You will always read tablature from left to right. You should always read the numbers from left to right. Click on the image below to get a better idea of what I’m talking about.

online guitar lessons for beginnersIf you notice that all the numbers are on a single line above one another this means you need to play all the notes at the same time as a chord. On the flip side if you notice the numbers are next to one another on the staff then you should play one after the other.

If you see the number this means you should play the open string. If an X shows up this means you should muffle the string on that line. I always tell people that you should forget about trying to learn to read the rhythm because there is no set rhythm notation in tab, and you can’t read the exact length of a note.

A lot of tab editors will either group the numbers far apart or together. However, tablature can definitely give you a little sign on how long a note is by leaving more or less space between the numbers. For example, if you see that the notes are spaced evenly it would be a guess that all the notes are equal in length.

As I stated earlier, guitar tabs are much easier to learn but if you really want to take playing the guitar seriously you should invest some time into learning standard notation. Sometimes guitar tabs are combined with standard notation so you can use the standard notation to read the rhythm and use the tab to know how and where to play notes.
